Nurses on the job: Their major concerns

Respondents to the ANNA/NN&I survey were able to provide written comments on different topics. Here are some excerpts from the 1,310 responses received.
Mental and physical wellbeing
“I think more companies need to invest in support for nurses in regard to feelings of being overwhelmed or depressed or overtired and overworked. Support us when we lose patients who have been with us for a long time.”
“Many times, we work multiple days in a row, don’t take breaks, and many times stay long after our scheduled shift is over to get work done.”
Staffing/work hours
“The hours are killer. No float pools and working short does not help. Add to that pressures around productivity and downsizing with no regard for patient acuity levels and you’ve got yourself the perfect storm for driving a 10-year veteran to clinical education. I have come to the point that I fear for my license.”
Job satisfaction
“Staffing, support, level of competence in new staff and infection control are the key issues.”
“I was resigning from a position due to managerial incompetence, lack of positive support and disregard for our needs and not receiving my schedule until 2 days before the week. My medical director and director of nursing came to me and inquired about my resignation, discussed my issues and were able to correct these issues with management.”
“I received a beautiful letter from a patient’s wife thanking me for the care I provided to her husband.”
