AUSTIN, Texas — At the National Kidney Foundation Spring Clinical Meetings, Kathryn Aebel-Groesch, MSW, LCSW, spoke about results of a study on the hospitalization of patients on peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis with symptoms of depression.

Researchers found patients on peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis showed symptoms of depression with a frequency similar to that seen in previous studies of patients on in-center hemodialysis. They found patients with depression symptoms were more frequently hospitalized compared to patients without depression symptoms.

“We want to be able to take a look at what we can do to make a difference. Nephrologists and social workers are the ideal partners to help patients,” she said.
