Survival rates improve for dialysis patients in Europe
The two-year survival of ESRD patients on dialysis or with a living-related kidney transplant in Europe increased 2% to 82.2% within three years, according to data published in the Clinical Kidney Journal and presented at the 52nd European Renal Association—European Dialysis and Transplant Association conference held May 28 to 31 in London. The data comes from the 2012 ERA/EDTA Registry Annual Report, which includes the national and regional renal registries in 30 countries in Europe and those bordering the Mediterranean Sea.
“That may not be earthshattering as yet, but it is an encouraging signal. We may be cautiously optimistic of having a positive impact on patient outcomes with good nephrological care,” said Professor Alberto Ortiz, editor-in-chief of the Clinical Kidney Journal. “But, of course, there is still lots of room for improvement!”
