Nephrologist Peter DeOreo dies

Peter DeOreo, chief medical officer for the Centers for Dialysis Care in Cleveland, died July 18 after a fight with cancer. He was 70.

DeOreo, who was also Medical Director of CDC’s Cleveland East facility, spent almost his entire medical career at CDC. He was an associate clinical professor of medicine at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, where he received his medical degree in 1972.

“He provided leadership that demonstrated his commitment to our patients and our mission,” said CDC CEO Diane Wish. “Dr. DeOreo’s passing is a great loss to CDC, specifically, and in the field of nephrology, generally. We all have memories of Peter that we will always treasure. He will be greatly missed.”

DeOreo contributed to many organizations during his career, including The Renal Network, where he was awarded the Dr. Hayes H. Davis Award for outstanding contributions. At Arbor Research for Collaborative Health, he was recognized for his work on the board of directors and his dedication to improving the lives of patients and the practice of health care. “He provided leadership, insight, wit, and compassion and was a scientist, intellectual, educator, and role model and friend to many,” said Wish.

DeOreo is survived by his wife Linda, daughter Elizabeth, son Stephen, grandchild Peter H. "Henry" DeOreo; brothers Gerard and William, and sister Mary.
