Kidney Community Emergency Response commemorates Katrina with preparedness video
The Kidney Community Emergency Response (KCER) Program has released a video on preparedness training to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
The presentation is available below.
The video describes Katrina’s impact on the dialysis community, community and stakeholder response to the crisis, lessons learned, emergency preparedness best practices, and how KCER emerged with a mission to help the end-stage renal disease community prepare and respond to emergencies. It was developed with the participation of the KCER Training & Exercise and Communications Committees.

Dialysis during a disaster: A first-person account
According to KCER, Hurricane Katrina affected the operation of 94 dialysis facilities in three states and more than 5,800 dialysis patients were in the affected areas. KCER had just begun as a special project of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services one month before the hurricane hit. As a result of the hurricane KCER’s mission broadened to help the ESRD community become more connected and prepared.
