DOPPS webinar will focus on management of serum potassium in hemodialysis

The Dialysis Outcomes Practice Patterns Study will conduct its next web conference on Thursday, Jan. 12 at 3 pm EST, with a focus on serum potassium in hemodialysis patients.

Elevated serum potassium is common in HD patients and may contribute to arrhythmias and mortality. Given renewed interest and recent introduction of new drugs, the webinar will focus on potassium distribution and treatments in the U.S. DOPPS sample of over 11,000 patients from 200 clinics.

Results of a recent paper focusing on dialysate potassium concentration and clinical outcomes will also be presented.

“Because clinical practices vary substantially across countries, the international nature of the DOPPS allowed us to identify dialysate potassium as an easily modifiable practice that can have a major impact on patients outcomes,” said Francesca Tentori, a nephrologist and DOPPS investigator who is a lead author on the study.
