Dialysis patient pleads guilty to accepting kickbacks in ambulance fraud case

A Philadelphia woman has pleaded guilty to accepting kickbacks for taking medically unnecessary ambulance rides from Brotherly Love Ambulance Co. of Northeast Philadelphia, The Philadelphia Business Journal reported.

In 2010, federal prosecutors said Keisha Regusters, 38, began being transported to dialysis by Brotherly Love, even though she could walk and could have been transported safely by means and was not eligible for ambulance service under Medicare requirements, according to the Journal.
The indictment alleges that the Medicare program paid more than $2 million in inappropriate bills. Prosecutors said $52,000 of those inappropriate bills were for Regusters' transportation. -by Rebecca Zumoff
