DaVita gets subpoenas for medical records of patients from Southern California dialysis clinics

DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc. has received six subpoenas from the Office of Inspector General, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, for documents from six different dialysis centers in Southern California, according to an 8-K form the company filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Each subpoena seeks the medical records of a single patient of the respective dialysis center.
In the form, DaVita says they were advised by an attorney with the Civil Division of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California that the "subpoenas relate to an investigation concerning the medical necessity of patient transportation." DaVita said they do not provide transportation or bill for the transport of its dialysis patients.
A DaVita spokesperson told NN&I that they "do not know the scope of the inquiry, or what specifically is being scrutinized beyond the fact that it relates to the medical necessity of transportation for dialysis patients." -by Rebecca Zumoff
