If you have a strong interest in all aspects of dialysis care — pediatrics, in-center services, home, new technology and clinic management — the upcoming Annual Dialysis Conference offers an opportunity to interact with the innovators and experts within the nephrology profession.
The conference convenes an international group of practitioners and researchers to discuss current developments in dialysis. The conference is designed for health professionals involved in new, as well as established, dialysis programs. Both researchers and clinicians will find sessions of interest through the multitude of simultaneous educational programs and updates.
Keynote presentations
The conference includes four keynote addresses. Terry Ketchersid, MD, senior vice president and chief medical officer of the Integrated Care Group with Fresenius Medical Care North America, will shed light on changes to the Medicare Quality Payment Program that impact physicians and other eligible clinicians by rewarding value and outcomes.
The second opening keynote will discuss the phenomenon of Mesoamerican nephropathy. To learn more about this, join the presentation by Ramon Garcia Trabanino, MD, that will shed some light on this unexplained epidemic in chronic renal disease.
The Barbara Prowant Lectureship and Nursing Keynote will be delivered by Karen Cox, PhD, RN, FAAN, executive vice president/chief operating officer at Children’s Mercy Kansas City. Cox will discuss nursing initiatives that are transforming health, leading change, influencing policy and ultimately improving the health of our nation during her presentation, “Creating sustainable changes in the workplace to improve outcomes – Lessons learned from the CSI (Clinical Scene Investigator) Academy.”
Focus on children
Only one nephrology conference each year includes a special focus on pediatrics. The Annual Symposium on Pediatric Dialysis 2018 begins with two major keynote addresses: “Long-term outcomes of pediatric ESRD” presented by Jaap Groothoff, MD, and “Peritoneal dialysis adequacy: Beyond Kt/V” by Jeffrey Perl, MD.
Learn more about home dialysis
Four pre-conference programs on March 3 will include the session, “Practical aspects in the management of peritoneal dialysis patients.” The program starts with a keynote on current trends by Peter Blake, MD, followed by a wide range of clinically relevant topics, including prescription management, peritoneal dialysis (PD) access techniques and application of new technology in remote monitoring and telehealth. This session will also provide an opportunity to discuss PD-relevant issues during the luncheon session Quiz the Experts. The day will end with closing remarks about the future of PD by Thomas Golper, MD.
The Home Hemodialysis Symposium will be the centerpiece of the ADC’s focus on home, targeting those involved in developing as well as already participating in existing home hemodialysis (HD) programs. There will be a focus on identifying factors that place the United States behind other countries in providing home dialysis care and presentations that address issues such as racial disparities, overcoming barriers and developing more physician champions. The day will also feature topics and effective strategies to transition to and from home HD and a luncheon session devoted to discussion on reimbursement issues.
The day will end with a brief preview to a more in-depth discussion during the main conference on the topic, “The back-end of home hemodialysis,” to be presented by John Agar, MD.
Nurses will have multiple choices of topics and workshops focusing on patient education, clinical topics and management in both HD and PD. Finally, the ADC technician program offers a full-day session of topics specifically designed for patient care technicians.
The Annual Dialysis Conference, the Annual Symposium on Pediatric Dialysis and the Annual Fundamentals of Dialysis in Children Course will be held at the Orlando World Center Marriott from March 3-6 in Orlando, Florida.
