On Oct. 8, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released the second round of its dialysis facility star rating system, and most of the dialysis facilities rated in CMS' Dialysis Facility Compare Star Rating Program in January 2015 and again in October 2015 received the same star rating each time.

The program was launched in January as part of CMS’ Dialysis Facility Compare website, which offers information on how clinics perform based on certain quality measures. The star ratings, from 5 (best) to 1 (worst), are based on those measures.

How dialysis facilities fared in the second round of the star rating program

According to an analysis developed by Mark Stephens of Prima Health Analytics, 54.6% of dialysis facilities included in the star rating program both times received the same rating, while 40.2% saw their rating shift up or down one star. Twenty-four percent of the dialysis facilities in this chart received a three star rating each time. -by Rebecca Zumoff
