RPA releases toolkit from its Shared Decision-Making Guideline as free download

The Renal Physicians Association is offering the summary recommendations and toolkit for its Shared Decision-Making in the Appropriate Initiation of and Withdrawal from Dialysis, 2nd Edition as a free download on its website. The complete guideline is available for free to RPA members, and the association said it has reduced its non-member price to $40.

In 2010, the Renal Physicians Association released the guideline, which provided 19 new and revised recommendations for initiating, withholding and withdrawing dialysis in adult and pediatric patients with acute kidney infection, chronic kidney disease, and end-stage renal disease. This clinical practice guideline is based on a systematic review of research evidence, consensus expert opinion informed by ethical principles, and case and statutory law, the RPA said in a news release.

“This toolkit provides assessment tools to explore patients’ goals and values even as it offers benchmarks to anticipate symptom burdens and prognoses,” said Alvin H. Moss, MD, who headed the guideline revision working group. “By making it more accessible and affordable, a greater number of clinicians can successfully partner with their patients for fully informed and shared decision making.”
