The National Kidney Foundation has launched a new portal on its website geared specifically toward African Americans at www.kidney.org/africanamericanhealth. The organization said it created the portal as part of an effort to educate African Americans about their increased risk of kidney disease and provide ways to lead a healthier lifestyle. African Americans are three times more likely to experience kidney failure than Caucasians due to high rates of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

"Because kidney disease often has no symptoms, it can go unnoticed until it is very advanced. But there's good news. Taking steps to live a healthy lifestyle can go a long way towards reducing risk, and early detection and treatment can slow or prevent the progression of kidney disease," said Bruce Skyer, chief executive officer of the National Kidney Foundation.

The new portal offers healthy lifestyle tips, a Kidney 101 section, an online risk quizand information about dialysis and transplantation.
