A law signed by former Illinois Governor Pat Quinn in June 2014 provides funding for kidney transplants for undocumented immigrants in Illinois, and the drugs needed to maintain the transplanted kidneys.
The law authorized State funding of the kidney transplants beginning Oct. 1, 2014. Recipients must already be receiving renal dialysis services covered by Medicaid.
Approximately 200 to 300 of the immigrants in the state illegally will be suitable for a transplant, Dr. Jose Oberholzer, chief of the Division of Transplantation at the University of Illinois at Chicago, told the Chicago Tribune. A handful will get transplants this year, he said, and an additional 20 or so next year.
