DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc. reported that net income for the second quarter of 2014 fell 42% to $147.68 million, or $0.68 per share, compared to $254.38 million or $1.18 per share in the same quarter last year.

CEO Kent Thiry said during a conference call that the kidney care division had a strong quarter, while the health care partners division did not perform so strongly.

Total U.S. dialysis treatments for the second quarter of 2014 were 6,196,394, or 79,441 treatments per day, representing a per day increase of 5.6% over the second quarter of 2013. Non-acquired treatment growth and normalized non-acquired treatment growth in the quarter increased 5% over the second quarter of 2013.

As of June 30, 2014, DaVita provided dialysis services to approximately 174,000 patients at 2,203 outpatient dialysis centers, of which 2,119 centers are located in the United States and 84 centers are located in ten countries outside of the United States. During the second quarter of 2014, DaVita opened 22 new dialysis centers in the United States. We also acquired three dialysis centers and opened six new dialysis centers outside of the United States.

"I'm stepping in to run HealthCare Partners for the foreseeable future, and I'll be spending a significant majority of my time there," Thiry said during a conference call. "It's been a difficult 18 months for all stakeholders and would be difficult for me to overstate how excited I am to step out under the field myself and lead that wonderful physician-led organization that puts a great value proposition of coordinated care on the table." -by Rebecca Zumoff
