CMS to hold open door forum on dialysis 5-star rating system

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will host a Special Open Door Forum Oct. 6 with patient advocacy groups and other interested parties to provide information and to solicit feedback on the introduction of the 5-star rating system on Dialysis Facility Compare, set to begin in January.

The renal community has been critical of the system, saying stakeholders had little say in the methodology used in its development, and that some of the performance measures used in the ratings haven't been properly vetted by the National Quality Forum or CMS itself.

CMS announced in September that it would delay the launch of the program, which was originally set for October, until January.

The CMS open door forum will provide background on the compare website star rating initiative, the development of star ratings for DFC, the difference between star ratings and the ESRD Quality Incentive Program, and the role of star ratings and other important consumer information in making treatment decisions.
