CMS says no delay in ICD-10 compliance deadline

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Marilyn Tavenner announced at a health care meeting today that the agency is sitting pat on the Oct. 1 compliance deadline for the nationwide conversion to the ICD-10 diagnostic and procedural codes, according to an online article in Modern Healthcare.

“There are no more delays and the system will go live on Oct. 1,” Tavenner said during her keynote address at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society convention in Orlando, Fla., the magazine reported. Tavenner also made it clear there will be no change to compliance dates for Stage 2 of meaningful use. Physicians and other eligible professionals, whose EHR incentive programs operate on the calendar year, have three dates—the first days of April, July and October—to start their 90-day clocks to be compliant.
CMS has been sensitive to providers' concerns, Tavenner said at the meeting, pointing out that the Stage 2 and Stage 3 start dates each had previously been pushed back a year. Some providers and health IT vendors could still qualify for “hardship exemptions,” she said, but CMS expects all Stage 2 providers to meet all Stage 2 criteria by 2015, Modern Healthcare reported.
