Antibiotics commonly dispensed without prescription in China
It is still common for antibiotics to be dispensed without a prescription at community pharmacies throughout China, though the practice is less prevalent in chain pharmacies, in urban areas and in places where a pharmacist is on duty, according to a recently published study.
‘Handshake stewardship’ effective and sustainable
Findings from an 8-year retrospective assessment of a handshake stewardship approach implemented at Children’s Hospital Colorado — characterized by team evaluation of prescribed antimicrobials and in-person feedback — showed that it is an effective and sustainable approach for stewardship efforts, researchers reported.

Cefiderocol noninferior to high-dose meropenem in phase 3 trial for nosocomial pneumonia
WASHINGTON — Cefiderocol, a novel siderophore cephalosporin, was noninferior to high-dose meropenem for the primary endpoint of all-cause mortality 14 days after treatment was started in patients with nosocomial pneumonia caused by gram-negative pathogens, according to results of a randomized phase 3 trial called APEKS-NP.

FDA accepts sNDA for Dificid in children with C. difficile
The FDA accepted a new drug application for the oral suspension formulation of Dificid, Merck’s macrolide antibiotic. At the same time, it accepted a supplemental new drug application for the drug in tablet and oral suspension form for the treatment of Clostridioides difficile infection in children aged 6 months or older, Merck announced.
