LOS ANGELES — David J. Weber, MD, MPH, weighed in on findings from the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America’s featured oral abstract at IDWeek.

A large cluster randomized trial involving 90 hospitals demonstrated that empiric extended-spectrum antibiotic prescribing was significantly reduced using an electronic medical record pop-up that provided an estimate of a patient’s risk for developing multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). The prompt allowed clinicians to determine if patients with abdominal infections could be safely given narrower-spectrum drugs.

Weber, the president-elect of SHEA and the Charles Addison and Elizabeth Ann Sanders Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at UNC Chapel Hill, called it “an enormously good study,” showing that the intervention can reduce the risk for MDROs and side effects and lower costs.
