LOS ANGELES — In a Healio video exclusive, the president-elect of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, or SHEA, gave an overview of the critical issues that health care epidemiologists will face in the coming year.

David J. Weber, MD, MPH, the Charles Addison and Elizabeth Ann Sanders Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at UNC Chapel Hill, emphasized the need to prepare for natural disasters — underscored by the recent hurricanes that ravaged the Southeast — as well pandemics and the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance in pathogens like Candida auris.

He also mentioned recent advancements that will be helpful in the hospital setting, like AI to predict patients who are at risk for infection and whole-genome sequencing to pinpoint outbreaks.
