Key takeaways:

  • Healio won a total of six APEX awards this year.
  • One winning story detailed the successes and failures of the CDC and FDA during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Healio’s infectious diseases and pediatrics news teams received an APEX award for a 2023 report on the CDC and FDA’s performances during the COVID-19 pandemic, which was part of a larger series called “Life during COVID.”

Life during COVID was a yearslong effort to examine how the pandemic has reshaped medicine and public health,” said Gerard Gallagher, Healio’s executive editor for infectious diseases and pediatrics. “Out of all the stories we reported for this series, this one may have been the most impactful. I am incredibly proud of our team’s effort.”

The winning story was based on interviews with nine experts who detailed the CDC and FDA’s successes and failures during the COVID-19 pandemic, including the development and authorization of vaccines in record time and early problems with testing and surveillance.

The APEX awards have been given annually for 36 years. This year, Healio received two Grand Awards and six total awards for publication excellence. The full list of winners can be seen here.
