Another person has died in a multistate Listeria outbreak linked to sliced deli meats, bringing the death toll to three, according to the CDC.
In all, 43 cases have been reported in 13 states, including one death each in Illinois, New Jersey and Virginia, the CDC reported. All 43 people have been hospitalized.
Genetic testing by several state health departments linked the outbreak to liverwurst products manufactured by Boar’s Head, which has recalled more than 7 million pounds of 71 different meat and poultry products in response to the outbreak, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
A full list of recalled items can be found here.
Outbreaks of Listeria can last for years. According to the CDC, it may take up to 70 days for people with a severe Listeria monocytogenes infection to begin to experience symptoms, although it usually takes 1 to 4 weeks.
High-risk groups include pregnant women, people aged 65 years or older and people with weakened immune systems, according to the CDC.
The CDC recommended that people clean refrigerators or any other areas that have come in contact with sliced deli meats and call their health care provider if they are experiencing symptoms of Listeria — which can include fever and muscle aches — and have recently eaten deli meat.
