VIDEO: How the US monitors food for antimicrobial resistance

PHILADELPHIA — In this video, Claudine Kabera, MPH, an epidemiologist at the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, discusses the U.S. government’s efforts to monitor the food supply for antimicrobial resistance.
The National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System for Enteric Bacteria (NARMS) is a collaborative effort between the CDC, FDA and U.S. Department of Agriculture that monitors antimicrobial resistance in humans, retail meats and food-producing animals, Kabera explained.
According to Kabera, a program lead at NARMS, the program tracks specific enteric bacteria, including Salmonella, Campylobacter and Escherichia coli.
“The end goal is that we want to make sure that we can keep as many antibiotics working as possible,” Kabera explained.
