WASHINGTON — IDWeek is back as an in-person conference for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following 2 years as an all-virtual event, the meeting is being held from Oct. 19-23 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., although virtual attendance remains possible through the conference’s online platform.
Healio | Infectious Disease News Chief Medical Editor Paul A. Volberding, MD, professor emeritus of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, said the ID community “undoubtedly has strong feelings as we begin IDWeek.”
“While we have maintained our important work despite the challenges of the pandemic, we know how vital it is to see each other in person, not just on our computer screens,” Volberding said. “An in-person meeting allows the important work of creating and strengthening networks and collaborations and exchanging our experiences, observations and impressions in advance of the careful scientific review that is also present in a scientific conference like IDWeek.”
The conference is requiring in-person attendees to verify their COVID-19 vaccination status using the Clear app and to wear a mask onsite at all times, except when eating, drinking or presenting on stage. Cloth masks are not permitted.
“We anticipate a vigorous debate and discussion and know this will reconfirm our dedication to solving the many problems we see affecting our patient’s lives,” Volberding said. “I expect seeing lots of excited greetings in the convention center halls and many overdue handshakes and hugs. I’m sure we are all eager attend to this year’s meeting. Maybe more than any we can recall!”
