WASHINGTON — Carlos del Rio, MD, an Infectious Disease News Editorial Board Member and the new president of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, discussed his agenda with Healio.

“IDSA has a very strong strategic plan,” del Rio said, and it focuses primarily on fighting antibiotic resistance, bolstering the ID workforce and improving physician compensation.

“And we have COVID — COVID continues to be an interest to our members, and there are emerging infections like monkeypox, and Ebola in Uganda, so we’ve got to pay attention to that,” he said.

Del Rio also mentioned that improving the diversity of IDSA is among his top priorities — from its members to the organization’s leadership.

“I’m very proud that I’m the first Hispanic president of IDSA,” del Rio said.
