The world’s largest HIV/AIDS conference is being held for the first time this year as a hybrid meeting.
In addition to the online broadcast, AIDS 2022 is being hosted live at the Palais des congrès de Montréal convention center in Montreal from July 29 through Aug. 2.
Preconference meetings covering a range of topics — including summits on gay sex and sexuality — will also be hosted in person at the convention center and online.
“We get a mix of people from all over the world, including researchers, advocates and policymakers,” said Adeeba Kamarulzaman, MBBS, president of International AIDS Society (IAS), which runs the meeting.
The conference was held as a virtual meeting in 2020 because of COVID-19. The IAS changed its refund policy this year to reimburse anyone whose visa application was denied or held up by Canadian authorities, preventing them from attending the meeting in person.
Among the highlights of this year’s meeting, researchers announced that a fourth person has achieved treatment-free sustained HIV remission via a stem cell transplant. Other highlights include new evidence that doxycycline is effective as post-exposure prophylaxis for STI prevention and the launch of the UNAIDS 2022 global HIV/AIDS update.
