Anthony S. Fauci, MD, has advised seven U.S. presidents as the longtime head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He will not advise an eighth.
Fauci, who has led the NIAID since 1984, has told multiple outlets that he plans to retire by the end of President Joe Biden’s current term.
“Sometime between now ... and January 2025, you can guarantee I’ll step down,” the 81-year-old Fauci told CNN in an interview broadcast Monday.
Politico was first to report Fauci’s thinking in an article published earlier Monday. Fauci clarified later to CNN that he was not announcing his retirement, just responding to a question about his future.
“We’re in a pattern now. If somebody says, ‘You’ll leave when we don’t have COVID anymore,’ then I will be 105,” Fauci told Politico. “I think we’re going to be living with this.”
Fauci, who has been the country’s most visible physician during the COVID-19 pandemic, recently tested positive himself.
In addition to running the NIAID, Fauci is Biden’s chief medical advisor.
