VIDEO: Why are hospitals still accepting ‘the same old same old’ in testing?

WASHINGTON – In this video, Debra A. Goff, PharmD, FCCP, discusses a panel she moderated at the World Anti-Microbial Resistance Congress that explored the use of rapid diagnostic tests in the hospital setting.
More specifically, Goff said, the panel examined the question, “Why are rapid diagnostic tests not in every hospital?”
“Why are we still using microbiology tests from decades ago that take 4 days for us to figure out what the organism is?” asked Goff, a professor of pharmacy practice and founding member of the antimicrobial stewardship program at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
“Why are we still accepting the same old same old?” she said. “Well, sometimes it comes down to the cost, but we have to get past that.”
