My career has been on the preventing infectious diseases side.
I got hooked as a resident in 1982 when, in short order, I saw a man with tetanus, an infant with Haemophilus influenzae type B meningitis who lost his hearing, and one admission after another with influenza A. That week, I knew what my life course in medicine would be — preventing preventable infections rather than treating them once they occurred. It has been one of the most fulfilling careers I could imagine!
