The AIDS 2020 conference began this week, with organizers opting for a digital format because of travel concerns related to COVID-19.

Monica Gandhi, MD, MPH, professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco and the San Francisco co-chair of the conference, told Healio that although the inability to hold the meeting in person was “heartbreaking,” there are potential benefits to this year’s virtual format.

“We adapted, and I think that there is a silver lining to it,” Gandhi said. “There is more accessibility to people able to get online from all over the world who absolutely could not have traveled here.”

Gandhi also noted that there was an influx of new registrations on the opening day of the meeting. Registration for AIDS 2020 can be accessed here.
