Choosing a career path in internal medicine residency was originally challenging because I found that I enjoyed all medical specialties. However, by the end of my second year, I realized it was the infectious disease cases I was most intrigued by; I also liked the fact that the field was not limited to one specific organ system. Infectious disease cases are complex, multifaceted and often require an interdisciplinary approach that appeals to my personality. I enjoy working with health care providers across many different specialties and helping to provide diagnostic clues to cases that are difficult to crack.
The breadth of cases we see in infectious diseases ensures that I’m never bored and always learning. I’m inspired every day by my colleagues who are experts in HIV, arthropod diseases, multidrug-resistant infections, immunocompromised hosts, hospital epidemiology and even pandemic preparedness. I feel so lucky to be completing my fellowship in infectious diseases and am eager to grow as a clinician, researcher and teacher in this ever-changing and exciting field!
