VIDEO: Why aren't hospitals using new antibiotics?
WASHINGTON — In this video from the World Anti-Microbial Resistance Congress, Debra A. Goff, PharmD, FIDSA, an infectious diseases specialist at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy, discusses the reasons why hospitals are slow to use new antibiotics.
Goff co-chaired a panel discussion on the topic with Infectious Disease News Editorial Board Member Thomas M. File Jr., MD, MSc, FIDSA, president of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and Jason M. Pogue, PharmD, BCPS AQ-ID, president-elect of the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists.
She said cost plays an outsized role in choosing antibiotics.
“Cost should never be the deciding factor, yet it is in so many hospitals,” Goff said.
