CDC launches infection control training program

National infection prevention experts, led by the CDC’s Health Research & Educational Trust, have developed a new curriculum focused on infection control.
The training program is called STRIVE, for States Targeting Reduction in Infections Via Engagement.
“The goal of the CDC/STRIVE infection control training program is to expand the infection control knowledge of all health care personnel,” Denise Albina, MSCEP, MSNW, MPH, CHES, a public health advisor with the CDC, told Infectious Disease News.
Specifically, the program is recommended for all staff, infection preventionists, infection prevention and control team or committee members, hospital leaders, clinical educators, nurse managers, physician managers, environmental services managers, and patient and family advisors, according to the CDC.
The program includes courses that address the technical and foundational elements for preventing health care-associated infections. Some courses focus on audit and feedback, hand hygiene, environmental cleaning and engaging patients and families.
The courses, which can be taken in any order, are composed of one or more modules. The CDC said that the modules can be used for:
- ·new employee training;
- annual infection prevention training; and
- periodic training.
Participants can receive free continuing education on the CDC’s Training and Continuing Education Online site by completing all course modules, taking the evaluation and post-test, and scoring at least 75% on the post-test.
Additional courses focusing on specific infections, such as Clostridioides difficile, are expected in late September of this year.
“Interested individuals can access these courses on the CDC/STRIVE website,” Albina said. “The modules in each course are downloadable pdfs.”
