JBS Tolleson, Inc. has expanded its nationwide recall of raw beef due to possible Salmonella contamination and warned that some consumers may still have recalled meat in their freezers.
In October, the company recalled 6.9 million pounds of beef product after federal officials linked it to a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Newport infections. This week, the company voluntarily recalled an additional 5.2 million pounds of raw beef.
“All of the affected product has already been removed from retail stores, but we are taking this careful step because some consumers may have frozen this product for future use,” the company said. “JBS Tolleson, in consultation with internal and external food safety experts, will continue to enhance its processes to ensure the safety of our products.”
According to the latest data reported by the CDC, the outbreak involves 246 cases of Salmonella Newport and 59 hospitalizations in 25 states. There have been no reported deaths.
The recalled beef products were produced and packaged under various brand names from July 26, 2018, to Sept. 7, 2018, and shipped nationwide. According to the CDC, more than 100 retailers, including chain retail locations and local stores, sold the recalled product. Officials urge consumers to check any beef products that may be in their freezer as it can still be contaminated with Salmonella. Any products with the establishment number “EST. 267” have been recalled and should be thrown out or returned to the store, the CDC said.
According to the agency, epidemiologic, laboratory and traceback evidence has indicated that ground beef produced by JBS Tolleson is the likely source of the outbreak. The investigation is ongoing. – by Marley Ghizzone
