SAN FRANCISCO — In this video from IDWeek, Sonali Advani, MBBS, MPH, assistant professor of infectious diseases at the Yale School of Medicine and associate hospital epidemiologist at Yale-New Haven Hospital, discusses the effects that a urine culture algorithm had on urine culture orders and catheter-associated urinary tract infections, or CAUTIs, at her hospital.

The algorithm was based on new guidelines from the Infectious Diseases Society of America and American College of Critical Care Medicine that recommend against treating positive cultures in a catheterized patient unless other sources of fever are ruled out.

According to Advani, implementing the algorithm led to a decrease in urine culture orders and CAUTIs at the hospital.

“Focusing on appropriate culturing in catheterized patients is very important, especially toward supporting antimicrobial stewardship efforts,” Advani said.
