VIDEO: Fungal Disease Awareness Week
SAN FRANCISCO — In this video from IDWeek, Snigdha Vallabhaneni, MD, MPH, medical epidemiologist in the CDC’s Mycotic Diseases Branch, advises clinicians to “think fungus.”
Vallabhaneni spoke with Infectious Disease News during Fungal Disease Awareness Week about the critical need for increased recognition and awareness of fungal diseases.
The annual health care cost of fungal diseases in United States was recently estimated to exceed $7 billion. However, there is concern that many infections go undiagnosed, delaying treatment, contributing to the rise of antimicrobial resistance and leading to increased morbidity and mortality rates and increased costs.
