SAN FRANCISCO — NASA astronaut Kate Rubins, PhD, spoke with Infectious Disease News at IDWeek about space travel and the effects it can have on physiology and the human microbiome.

Rubins explained that scientists are interested in learning what kinds of infections astronauts carry into space and what might be encountered on long missions.

“For example, what sorts of infections or illnesses could present a problem when we’re going to Mars?” she said.

Disclosure: Rubins reports no relevant financial disclosures.
