Infectious Disease News has won two awards from the American Society of Healthcare Publication Editors, which recognizes outstanding editorial and design excellence and achievements in health care publications.

Gerard Gallagher, senior staff writer for Infectious Disease News, won the silver award for “Best Feature Article” for “CDC’s EIS program molds clinicians into public health professionals.” The article, which was published in June 2017, focused on the important work of the CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service — a fellowship program famous for its investigations of outbreaks worldwide — and included interviews with 15 past and present EIS officers.

Additionally, Infectious Disease News staff won the bronze award for “Best Feature Article Series” for the “Infectious Disease News 30th Anniversary” collection. Articles included in that series, published from January through December 2017, explored how infectious diseases and our approach to treatment have evolved since the publication debuted in 1988.

Healio’s editorial staff won five other awards in the annual competition.

The gold award for “Best Legislative/Government Article” went to the HemOnc Today staff for their article, “FDA’s ‘breakneck pace’ accelerates drug access, but concerns persist about lack of complete data.” Primary Care Optometry News staff won the bronze award for “Best Regular Department” for their “PCON Reports.” Articles written by Regina Schaffer for Endocrine Today (“As obesity rate rises, ‘double diabetes’ looms large”) and Casey Tingle for Orthopedics Today (“Changed setting for joint reconstruction surgery possible in 2018”), won both the silver and bronze awards for “Best Single News Article,” respectively. Healio Gastroenterology’s Katrina Altersitz won the silver award for “Best Profile” for “Onsite with OpenBiome.”

“Our staff’s ongoing efforts have earned these exceptional honors and I am ecstatic that their hard work is recognized,” said Joan-Marie Stiglich, Chief Content Officer of Healio. “Earning these awards is a demonstration of our dedication to provide physicians with timely, relevant news and information.”
