VIDEO: Providers key to improving vaccination coverage

WASHINGTON, D.C. — During a recent press conference hosted by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, Infectious Disease News Editorial Board member Kathleen M. Neuzil, MD, MPH, discussed influenza vaccination rates in the United States and how health care providers can improve coverage.
“What we’ve learned from many studies over the years is that a strong recommendation from a health care provider is important to an individual patient making a decision about receiving an influenza vaccine,” says Neuzil, who is also a professor of medicine and director of the Center for Vaccine Development at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. “We can publish the papers and we can have the press releases, but we know the individual patient really trusts their health care provider, and so it is very important that health care providers take on this role.”
