NEW ORLEANS — In this video, Kathleen M. Neuzil, MD, MPH, Infectious Disease News Editorial Board member and director of the Center for Vaccine Development at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, talks about the effectiveness of the influenza vaccine to prevent influenza-related death in children.
Neuzil was one of several experts asked to select the most important papers in vaccinology over the past year and present the findings during a session at ASM Microbe. Neuzil picked a paper by Brendan Flannery, PhD, epidemiologist from the CDC’s Influenza Division, and colleagues that showed the influenza vaccine significantly reduces the risk for laboratory-confirmed influenza-associated death in children.
“It’s really remarkable that we now know [the vaccine] prevents not only influenza illness, but can also prevent death from influenza,” Neuzil said.
