NFID, ICID offering free CME program on influenza vaccine

A free online CME program focuses on the challenges of improving influenza vaccine uptake in Americans aged 65 years and older.

The “Influenza Knowledge Transfer Series” was developed by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) and the International Centre for Infectious Diseases.

“It’s a very comprehensive introduction to influenza and influenza immunization focused particularly on people age 65 and older,” William Schaffner, MD, Infectious Disease News Editorial Board member, NFID medical director and professor of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, said in an interview.

In September, the CDC reported what it called a concerning decline in influenza vaccinations among older Americans, including a 3.3 percentage point dip in those aged 65 years and older. The new CME is aimed at getting those numbers up.

“I would say just about any question you had about influenza and the influenza vaccine is addressed in this very comprehensive CME program,” Schaffner said. – by Gerard Gallagher
