NEW ORLEANS — Daniel P. McQuillen, MD, FIDSA, Infectious Diseases Society of America chair of IDWeek and senior staff infectious disease physician at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, reviews key presentations at this year’s meeting, including discussions on Zika virus infection, antimicrobial stewardship programs, and national outbreak investigations, particularly of Mycobacterium chimaera among patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

Other events at IDWeek included a town hall meeting, where ID professionals gathered to strategize ways to enhance health care system values, as well as the “IDBugBowl” — where students, residents and fellows participated in a Jeopardy-style trivia game about microbiology.

“[It was] extremely well-attended and something we’ll be doing again and again,” McQuillen says. “It really highlights the exciting future of pipeline of infectious disease professionals that are coming into our society.”
