NEW ORLEANS — At IDWeek 2016, Carlos del Rio, MD, FIDSA, infectious disease physician at Emory University and former chair of the HIV Medicine Association, discusses the epidemiology of HIV over the past year. He says that addressing the opioid epidemic in the United States — which has resulted in an increase in HIV and hepatitis C virus infections, particularly in Scott County, Indiana — is important to maintain progress made in HIV, especially among injection drug users.

del Rio also reviews research on HIV prevention strategies, including the use of a vaginal ring containing dapivirine, treatment as prevention, ART among serodifferent couples having condomless sex, and pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP.

"Addressing adherence in young populations is a major challenge both in treatment and prevention," he says.
