VIDEO: Session on HIV cure highlights therapeutic approaches, remaining challenges

In this video, Daniel Kuritzkes, MD, principal investigator of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group and chief of infectious diseases at Brigham and Women's Hospital and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, reviews the different areas covered in the session on HIV cure at ASM Microbe 2016.
The presentations reviewed “a broad range of topics related to HIV cure,” according to Kuritzkes, including gene editing, immune-based therapies and immunological approaches. A primary area of focus was the latent reservoir in patients with HIV.
“One of the key things that’s holding us back is not really knowing how best to measure the reservoir – [or] even how to define it,” Kuritzkes said. “Developing correlates of eradication and, eventually, surrogate markers for eradication, are really going to be essential in order to speed progress in this field.”
