VIDEO: New drugs, strong infection control needed to overcome resistance mechanisms

BOSTON — David Hooper, MD, chief of the infection control unit at Massachusetts General Hospital, discusses the mechanisms of bacteria that promote antimicrobial resistance to various drugs, including fluoroquinolones. Some of these mechanisms involve bacteria’s ability to use proteins to “pump” drugs out of the cell.

“This highlights the importance of needing new antimicrobials in the development pipeline, as well as managing the drugs that we have now with careful antibiotic stewardship…and careful infection control activities,” he said.
