Sequencing results have identified the Zika virus strain currently circulating in Cabo Verde as the same one associated with adverse birth outcomes in the Americas, according to a WHO statement.

This is the first confirmation of the outbreak strain within the African region, according to the statement, and is suspected to have been imported from Brazil.

“The findings are of concern because it is further proof that the outbreak is spreading beyond South America and is on the doorstep of Africa,” Matshidiso Moeti, MB, MSc, WHO regional director for Africa, said in a press release. “This information will help African countries to reevaluate their level of risk and adapt and increase their levels of preparedness.”

As of May 8, WHO reports 7,557 suspected cases of Zika in Cabo Verde, and three confirmed cases of microcephaly. WHO is advising countries within the region to increase Zika and congenital malformation surveillance, educate pregnant women and promote various interventions against mosquito bites and sexual transmission.
