Resistance to ART among patients with HIV is an important issue for all clinicians to be aware of, according to Joseph Eron, MD, of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

He reviews the ways resistance can occur and how different populations may be affected. Physicians should request baseline resistance testing for all patients with HIV, according to Eron.

While resistance is not as common as it once was, the consequences are still significant.

“The good news is – it’s uncommon to see failure,” Eron said.

However, he added: “We don’t want to take any risks in terms of treating people that have drug resistance.”
