The CDC recently released a resource designed to help dental health care professionals prevent infections, according to a news release.

The document, “Summary of Infection Prevention Practices in Dental Settings: Basic Expectations for Safe Care,” uses CDC recommendations from its 2003 guidelines for infection control in dental health, which is the standard of practice for dentistry, as well as other CDC recommendations published more recently.

The resource provides a summary of basic infection prevention recommendations, a checklist to encourage compliance with those recommendations and references to other resources for sterilization, safe injection practices and hand hygiene.

The CDC recommends that all dental practices designate one person as an infection prevention coordinator who develops written policies based on the resource. In addition, the coordinator should address any infection prevention issues with other staff members and ensure they are aware of the equipment and supplies necessary to maintain the standard of care.
