BOSTON — Joseph J. Eron, MD, professor of medicine at the University of North Carolina, summarizes his presentation on the future of ART at the 2016 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections.
Current ART therapies are effective and can suppress viral loads to undetectable levels in 90% of patients receiving treatment, Eron says. Simpler therapies with less toxicity, however, are needed to increase treatment rates in patients with substance abuse, patients with mental illnesses, children and adolescents.
Disclosure: Eron reports being a consultant for Bristol-Myers Squibb, Gilead Sciences, Janssen, Merck, and ViiV Healthcare, and reports institutional grants from AbbVie, Gilead Sciences, Janssen and ViiV Healthcare.
