VIDEO: ‘Rather optimistic’ sessions on HIV therapy, epidemiology at IDWeek 2015
SAN DIEGO — Pierre Tattevin, MD, PhD, of CHU De Rennes, Hôpital Pontchaillou, Service De Maladies Infectieuses, in Rennes, France, reviews two sessions on HIV at IDWeek 2015 that both included “rather optimistic” take-home messages.
The first session provided an update on HIV, with a focus on medications. “The list of the drugs that are available are now very affordable,” Tattevin said.
These therapies enable physicians to find a drug for any patient with HIV, according to Tattevin. While they all still need to be taken for the patient’s entire life, they are “compatible with a normal life … with a good impact on quality of life as compared [with] the older drugs,” he says.
The second session featured an expert from the CDC, who focused on HIV epidemiology. Tattevin describes the epidemiology of HIV as “quite good.”
“The number of new infections are significantly decreasing each year,” he said.
