The Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas announced this morning that Thomas Eric Duncan, the patient diagnosed with Ebola in Texas after being in Liberia, has died, according to a statement on the hospital’s website.

Duncan left Liberia on Sept. 19 and entered the United States the next day. He developed symptoms 4 to 5 days later and presented to the hospital on Sept. 28.

The CDC and the Texas Department of State Health Services continue to monitor 10 definite contacts and 38 possible contacts of Duncan for signs of Ebola. They are receiving daily temperature checks and will be monitored for 21 days, the incubation period for Ebola virus.

“The past week has been an enormous test of our health system, but for one family it has been far more personal,” Texas Department of State Health Services Commissioner David L. Lakey, MD, said in a statement. “Today they lost a dear member of their family. They have our sincere condolences, and we are keeping them in our thoughts. The doctors, nurses and staff at Presbyterian provided excellent and compassionate care, but Ebola is a disease that attacks the body in many ways. We’ll continue every effort to contain the spread of the virus and protect people from this threat.”
